How “Internet Slowdown Day” Could Save Your Business

By September 10, 2014Blog, Online Marketing

Without net neutrality, you’re going to lose a lot of money.

Lack of speed kills websites and their businesses.

Today’s internet user absolutely will not wait for your page to load. 47% of Americans expect your site to load in two seconds or less. In fact, if your site loads even one thousandth of a second slower than your competition, your clients will abandon your site. Every second that your customers wait, you lose money.

That’s why it is so important for small business owners to do everything in their power to prevent the looming changes proposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

An Assault on Small Business Sites

The FCC is proposing changes that would allow broadband providers to create a premium tier of guaranteed services for internet firms that can afford it, like Netflix. While being able to stream Breaking Bad episodes without problems sounds on the surface like a delightful proposition, industry experts warn about the dangers of creating a two channeled “fast” and “slow” internet. If big companies are able to purchase the extraordinary competitive advantage that faster speeds would offer, how are start ups and smaller businesses supposed to compete?

Business owners relying on their websites for sales are not the only Americans expected to suffer under the proposed changes. Experts predict that the changes will result in higher costs, lower quality service and reduced innovation.

Fighting Back Against the FCC

Organizations like  “the Battle for the Net” have responded to the threat from the FCC by organizing Internet Slowdown Day, a protest during which sites like Netflix, Etsy and, yes, Turn the Page Online Marketing, have added the dreaded “spinning wheel of death” loading icon to their landing pages to encourage users to email and call their representatives, the White House and the FCC. While the sites will not actually function more slowly, the icon serves as a warning about the consequences of letting the FCC abuse its power.
