Put the “Happy” Back in Your Employees’ Holidays

‘Tis the season where we’re all wishing each other “Happy Holidays” and spreading good cheer, but are you doing everything you can to ensure that your employees actually are happy?

Work environment can be a major factor in employee satisfaction and as masters of freaky fun, we’d like to pass along some of our wisdom.

Fancify Your Physical Environment

Here in the Digital Content Creation Department (TTP-speak for the Writers’ Room), we seem to add more and more decorations every day. Why? Because it makes us happy. And we get frequent visitors, come to marvel at its beauty (or maybe our beauty?). We’ve totally personalized our room because sometimes staring at a sparkly star hanging from the ceiling helps with writer’s block.

The lesson here? Don’t be afraid to encourage your employees to own their space. If they’re inspired by that zombie football player figure on their desk (his name is Red, thank you), don’t hold them back. A personalized zone will make your coworkers feel more at home and accepted.

Encourage Engagement

We tell you this all the time with social media, but getting your employees to interact with one another is perhaps even more important to a successful business than getting the internet involved.

TTP’s weekly Freaky Fridays keep us updated on what other departments are doing and let us actually get to know the other people in our office. They’ve been known to reduce us to tears of laughter and are both a great break from the workday and a wonderful start to the weekend.

Of course, being freaky is not for everyone, but it’s always a wise idea to give your employees opportunities to get to know one another on more than just a water cooler basis.

Treat them Well

This is a no-brainer. Exercise the Golden Rule when it comes to your employees. Make wise decisions and know that sometimes the effects can radiate all the way out to your coworkers’ friends and families. It’s an intimidating thought, but an important one to remember because these people are trusting you to do what is in their best interest. Treating them well can only do you good! And even if they don’t outright express their appreciation, it will show in the work that they do for you.

She came on as a content writer in September 2013 and was promoted to Director of the Digital Content Department (encompassing blogging, SEO writing, website content, & social media) in February 2015. With a BA in English and an MFA in Fiction Writing, Brittany’s journeys from Mizzou to Missoula, MT and back to Missouri prepared her for the fun, fast-paced online marketing agency that is TTP.
