Ash Spreading Law

Cremation is an increasingly popular way for dealing with earthly remains. It’s considered environmentally responsible, and the “cremains” are harmless. However, loved ones are sometimes troubled by what to do with the ashes after cremation.

Various Options for Cremation Remains

Statistics suggest that people are divided about what to do with the remains after cremation. Some bury them, others keep them. The remainder participate in an ash spreading ceremony. The first two options don’t present a difficulty as long as laws are observed. Ash spreading may be different. States and local governments create their own laws about where an ash spreading ceremony can take place.

Popular Locations for Ash Spreading

Many people request that their remains be spread in their yard or on other personal property after cremation. Other people prefer a more public spot such as a golf course, favorite fishing hole or community park. Some people felt a spiritual connection to the beach, a national park or a hiking trail during life and would like to have an ash spreading ceremony carried out in that location after their death. These and a great many other locations are all possibilities for ash spreading.

Ash Spreading Laws

The laws that govern ash spreading vary a great deal between states and even individual municipalities. If the ash spreading will occur on privately held land, then it is essential to obtain the owner’s permission. It’s possible to have ash spreading ceremonies in national parks, but only with a permit and within certain stringent guidelines. Because laws vary widely, it’s helpful for the person considering cremation to do some homework before passing away. This takes pressure off of loved ones, who must nonetheless double check the law before scattering ashes. Also, the funeral home that performs the cremation will probably have helpful advice.

Where not to Spread Ashes

When it comes to spreading your loved one’s ashes, there’s nothing more sacred than honoring their last wishes. That does come at a cost in some places, however, because many states, beaches, and national parks have strict guidelines concerning ash spreading. This is something everyone should consider if they’re thinking about cremation.

California Ash Spreading Requirements

The state of California prohibits cremation ash spreading on the beach. Individuals are able to scatter cremains five hundred yards from shore, however. Many states don’t hold strict enforcement of ash spreading but that doesn’t mean it’s legal. Be mindful of others when honoring your loved one.

Put yourself in another person’s shoes. Even if you’re comfortable with the idea of cremation and ash spreading, would you want to walk across cremains at the beach? Many people find that disrespectful and would feel uncomfortable enjoying their day knowing they had done something to hurt the memory of another.

Grand Canyon Permits

The Grand Canyon and other national parks require a permit for ash scattering. The chief park ranger must explicitly permit it to happen as well. During the cremation process, cremation ashes must be pulverized and widely distributed. National park rules prohibit ash spreading near roads, developed areas, and bodies of water.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows ash spreading at sea but only if it’s done three nautical miles from shore. Biodegradable objects relating to cremation are okay. Urns and pet ashes, however, are not. Scatterings must be reported to the regional administrator of the EPA within thirty days.

Ash spreading on private land requires permission from an owner and places such as Central Park and Disneyland are not open to cremation spreading. Cremains scattered by airplane is okay as long as the ashes doesn’t pose a threat to people or property. Spreading ashes by bodies of water is a no-no for almost every state.

Wherever you’re permitted to honor your loved one’s request and continue spreading ashes freely, know that you’ll always have a reason to visit that national park. Your loved one gave you something to remember them by. Their love for nature is something you’ll never forget.
Keep in mind that spreading ashes by a body of water is seldom permitted. Many national park prefer that people don’t spread ashes in developed area or near roadways. It’s important to keep in mind that many people visit national parks each year. Be mindful of them so they’re mindful of you.
The national parks serve as a wonderful place for spreading ashes. Select the state and park that your loved one enjoyed and contact the proper authorities to make sure you’re allowed to spread ashes there. Be mindful of vacationers and take in the beautiful scenery around you. There’s a reason why your loved one picked the place they did.

Most Beautiful Places to Spread Ashes: Mountains

When considering different locations to spread ashes, don’t discount the mountains. Beautiful and serene, they provide the perfect final resting place for anyone who loved the Great Outdoors. From the snow covered peaks of the Grand Teton to the horizontal peak of Table Mountain in South Africa, you have options as to where to spread ashes. Selecting one location proves to be difficult, however, because each is so very perfect for ash spreading.

Here is a list of some of the most incredible mountains in the world to spread ashes on or near:

• Mount Shasta in Northern California. Located near the border of Oregon, the volcano is a favorite among New Agers. It’s a possibility for ash spreading.
• Ama Dablam in Nepal. Sharp contrasting angles of rock make this mountain easily recognizable. Snowcapped peak makes the angles even more noticeable. Ash spreading may or may not be permitted at this location.
• Mount Eiger in Switzerland. Among the more challenging rock faces to scale, the mountain is gorgeous to look at. Many climbers have perished attempting to climb Mount Eiger. You may want to spread ashes at the foot of it rather than on the mountain itself. Ash spreading shouldn’t be treacherous.
• Glacier National Park in Montana. Climate change is making many of the glaciers melt. If you want to see the park in all its glory, do so before 2030. It’s the perfect setting for ash spreading. Learn more about whether or not you can spread ashes by visiting the park’s website.
The mountains serve as one of the most beautiful places to spread ashes. Choose the location that is right for you and your loved one. The aforementioned list of suggestions are among the most breathtaking spots on the planet. Ash spreading is one way to honor a person, their love for nature, and the adventurous life they lived.
Keep in mind that not every country honors “last wishes.” Before you spread ashes on any mountain, make sure it’s permitted by asking the people in charge. Ash spreading may be frowned upon in some areas of the world so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

How Having a Bucket List Can Change the Way You Live

Most people think of a bucket list as a list of activities to make their lives better in the proverbial “someday,” but did you know that having a bucket list can actually improve your quality of life today? It’s true. Don’t wait until it’s time to start your funeral planning to start your bucket list. Here are four ways that having a bucket list can change the way you live today.

Four Ways a Bucket List Can Make Every Day Better

1. It Will Help You Focus on Your Priorities

Without clear priorities, it is too easy to just spend your money and time frivolously until it’s time to begin your funeral planning. With a bucket list, however, you can start putting your time and your money towards those activities you can’t wait to accomplish before it’s time to start funeral planning.

2. It Will Give You Something to Look Forward To

With work, bills and family responsibilities, it can be easy to fall into a boring routine of doing the same old thing every day until it’s time for funeral planning. This kind of life can seem hopeless. With a bucket list, however, you have goals to look forward to and to strive for.

3. It Will Help You Expand Your Horizons

While making your bucket list, the world is your oyster. You can put absolutely anything on your list that you want. After you fill it in with all the usual things, you may start thinking of new things you would like to try before it’s time to start funeral planning.

4. It Will Help You to Start Taking Steps in a Positive Direction

Without a bucket list, you are stuck with the feeling that things will get better “someday,” but someday never seems to come. Instead, it’s time to start funeral planning before you know it. With a bucket list, however, you have a clear plan of what you want to do, which is the first step in actually making it happen.

Four Ways You Can Prepare Your Child for a Funeral

One of the many decisions you may have to make during the funeral planning process is whether or not you will allow your small children to attend. There are strong arguments on both sides of the issue, and the choice is ultimately up to you. If you do decide to bring your children to a funeral, make sure that you prepare them in advance. Here are four ways you can prepare your child for a funeral as part of your funeral planning process.

Preparing Your Child for a Funeral

1. Explain What Your Child Will See There

Since most small children do not participate in funeral planning, they generally have little idea of what to expect. Spend some time before the big day talking about what your children will see and experience. Prepare them for seeing the body and for all the various reactions that people are likely to have.

2. Spell Out Behavior Expectations

Next, make sure that your child knows exactly how he or she is expected to be behave at the funeral. Oftentimes, something as simple as setting expectations and consequences during the funeral planning process can make a dramatic difference in a child’s behavior. While crying, being upset and getting angry are all acceptable behaviors, running throughout the funeral home and being generally disruptive are not.

3. Answer Any Questions Your Child May Have

Funerals can bring up many questions in children, especially questions about what happens after you die. Handle these questions during the funeral planning process, when you will have time to discuss them properly. If your beliefs differ from others’, you may want to explain their beliefs as well.

4. Keep Your Own Reactions Appropriate

Children generally don’t know how to respond to death and funerals, so they will pick up on subtle cues from you. While it is good to show some emotions, you may want to keep your most vulnerable displays for once they are in bed, if possible. This will help funeral planning go more smoothly for everyone.

Eight Unique Ways to Honor Your Loved One at The Funeral

Your loved one was one-of-a-kind. Honor their life and their memory by making their funeral arrangements one-of-a-kind as well. Here are eight ways to make your funeral arrangements perfectly reflect the loved one you are wanting to remember.

8 Ways to Honor the Personality of the Departed

1. Showcase Their Collectibles or Hobbies

Did your loved one love super heroes, fishing or a certain sports team? Set out action figures or a fishing pole, or choose flowers in team colors.

2. Play Their Favorite Music

Whether your loved one listened to country, gospel or rock and roll, be sure to incorporate some of their favorite songs into the funeral arrangements.

3. Create a Slide Show

Relive all of your favorite memories with the deceased by sharing a beautiful slide show of their life from birth through old age.

4. Have Guests Share Their Favorite Memories

Alternately, let all of the guests share their favorite memories by providing an open mic as part of the funeral arrangements. People will love sharing their favorite heartfelt and funny moments.

5. Serve Their Favorite Food and Drinks

Did your loved one always eat sandwiches or drink Jager bombs? Serve them at the meal after the service, or take everyone out to the deceased’s favorite restaurant to get them.

6. Create a Monument or Memorial

If your funeral arrangements include cremating your loved one instead of burying them, you will need a place to visit. Plant a tree or build a small stone statue in their honor for a lovely place to visit.

7. Make a Donation in Their Name

Honor your loved one and help others at the same time by making a donation in your loved one’s name. Choose an organization that works to fight the disease they died from or one that helps a cause they cared about deeply.

8. Pass Out Thoughtful Mementos

Give your guests something thoughtful to remember the deceased by. Seedlings, charms and photo candles are all thoughtful memorial gifts to include in the funeral arrangements.
