Don’t Waste it: How to Make the Most of Your Company’s Blog

By March 29, 2013Blog, Blogging

So, you set up a blog for your business. You’re ready to start publishing blog posts, but how do you make sure this new blog is worth your time?

Your blog can be more than a few updates posted every few months. When used correctly, your business blog can provide you with leads, teach customers, inform readers of upcoming promotions, and connect you with business partners.

You can knock it out of the park by keeping a few pointers in mind as you develop your company’s blog.

Make the Most of Your Company’s Blog

1. Use LinkedIn to your advantage

Sure, you could post your hot off the press blog post on LinkedIn, close your tab and move on with your day. A few connections might see that blog post, but you can make a bigger impact with just a few simple moves.

First, connect with people on LinkedIn everyday. Expand your network by finding colleagues, business partners, clients and former coworkers. As you connect with them, take the time to send a quick personal note.

The second step to making the most of your small business blog on LinkedIn is sharing relevant blog posts with interested people. Before you simply paste your blog post’s URL into the update box, think about who might want to read your blog post. Comment at that individual with a personal note about your blog post.

2. Share worthwhile information

If your readers can’t benefit from your blog post, it shouldn’t be on your blog.

To choose your business blog topics, think like your target audience. Your blog should address questions and problems that your customers and clients face on a daily basis.

3. Make your blog posts easy to share

Your blog post on the best ways to budget for a kitchen remodel might be full of insight, but it won’t get far if readers can’t share it.

Help readers share your blog posts by using social media buttons. Social media buttons let readers post your content on their profile, send it in a message, or promote it to a specific friend. Take advantage of these tools. Pick the right social media buttons. If your clients are in the business of designing homes, a houzz button should be on your blog. If your customers are busy buying products and reading articles on Pinterest, use a button to allow readers to pin your blog post easily.

4. Be consistent

Whether you write for your blog once a week or once a day, you should form a habit and stick to it. Write often. Posting blog content to your website not only gives your readers something to come back to, but it also improves your site’s online presence. Posting fresh, industry-relevant content is just one piece of several involved with search engine optimization, the process that help users find your site when they search.

5. Don’t forget your readers

All of your blog content should be geared toward your readers, who might be potential customers, clients and future business partners. Remind yourself of your audience every time you get ready to publish new blog posts.

6. Keep search engines in mind

While we’re talking about audiences, don’t ever forget who else is reading your blog. The search engines are there, reading through the huge amounts of articles on the internet. Search engines rank blog posts, including your articles, according to a complex system. They’re reading your blog posts, too! If you do think about the search engines as you write, your blog posts are more likely to show up in search results.
