The story really doesn’t need to be repeated, we all learned Aesop’s popular fable in grade school and it’s a tale that has stuck with all of us through out the years. The quick and bragging rabbit challenges the slow and thoughtful tortoise to a race and falls asleep before the race is over only to awaken as the tortoise crosses the finish line as the victor.
I’ve always thought there to be more to the story. The rabbit never should have lost a foot race with a turtle. It’s a turtle for pete’s sake. And what was he doing challenging a creature that he knew he could outrun in the first place? Come on, silly rabbit. You have too much time on your hands. Er, feet.
I accept the lesson of this fable I’ve always been taught that persistence and dedication pay off every time. But what about the other side of the story? What about the lesson that if you have an ability or tool like none other then you need to apply your skills to actually become successful?
That’s the lesson to keep in mind when using social media as a tool for your business. Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, LinkedIn, the list goes on — are all powerful and useful WHEN APPLIED!! It’s one thing to sign up but if you aren’t working with the sites regularly to stay in the ‘newsfeed’ and develop relationships online with customers so they remember your name and recommend your services, then you might as well lay down any hopes of a successful online marketing campaign and lose the race altogether.
The old methods of reaching customers are heading out the door and soon will be nothing more than turtle soup. The rabbit, though, well he’s still here and is looking for his second chance from his first lackadaisical performance. And if you learned anything from him and his Aesop fable then it is to use the great tools that stand before you and your customers AND PUT THEM TO USE FOR YOU!!
