While it seems that everyone has jumped on the social media bandwagon, you may think of it more as the social media Titanic. Being fearful of social media is the main reason many companies have never established a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Google + or any other social media outlet. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons businesses are hesitant to use social media and ways to address these concerns.

What’s holding companies back from social media?

Fear. I’ve heard it over and over again, “What if we have a Facebook page and someone leaves a negative comment on it?”

Answer: Customers will say things about you regardless of whether or not you have a Facebook page. The advantage you’ll have with a page is that you can answer the negative comments. If a customer has a problem you can show the world how you’re going to fix it. The flip side is you also have a place for people to say how much they loooove you.

Lack of knowledge. “I don’t have any idea how to start.”

Answer: Simply start at the beginning. Set up business Facebook and Google + pages as well as a Twitter and Yahoo Local accounts. Share information about your company and your industry. Post photos of yourself or your employees and examples of your work if appropriate. Write blogs and share them.

Reluctance to share. “Why should I promote someone else?”

Answer: Re-tweeting, sharing, or adding links into your blog is an easy way to add and flavor your content. It will also train you to scope out what others are doing, learn new ways to promote yourself, and educate your readers. Don’t forget to share fun stuff as well. Social media is also about reciprocating, meaning if you promote me, I’ll promote you.

Lack of time. “When am I supposed to do all this stuff?”

Answer: Sure, it will take some time to set up your social media accounts. But it took time to set up your business checking account and you did that, didn’t you? Start slow and post a few times a week for the first month or so. Use resources like Hootsuite to share posts across your accounts.  Ask employees to contribute ideas or even blogs. If someone in your company wants to manage your social media do it together for a while until you’re satisfied with their efforts. Give them clear guidelines what you want your message to be.

No immediate ROI. “Show me the money!”

Answer: Social media results don’t come fast, but you didn’t open your doors and buy the Cadillac the same day, right? The nice thing about social media is that you can measure it. You can’t measure how many people drove by your billboard. Google Analytics, Hootsuite, Radian6, or other tracking services will tell you who, what , where, when, and why, sometimes for free.

Social media is here to stay and like it or not it goes way beyond pop stars and illiterates from New Jersey. But think of it this way, if pop stars and illiterates from New Jersey can do it, so can you!
