Don’t Fall Victim To Bad SEO

A website with good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and online presence attracts the little robots that crawl around the web looking for site content. They are the ones who index the content for storage in the Search Engine Data Centers.  All that Data is just waiting for the next search, ready and willing to fulfill your request and present you with the most relevant information. The information is presented in a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) and how your business ranks in that list is what SEO and online prominence can influence. And just like your entry into that ancient text known as the phone book that helped potential customers find you, it’s pretty darn important to be found online.

Figuring out how to prime your online presence, site and content is the challenge and this is what another SEO, the Search Engine Optimizer can do for you. But as with anything else you need to be wary of the snake oil SEOs out there. And there are many.

Just like losing 40 pounds in fifteen minutes and getting money from a Nigerian prince there are less than honest purveyors of search engine optimization so doing your homework is essential.

Keep these things in mind when it comes to allowing a total stranger to get their hands on your online presence and website and then send you a bill.

-Be wary of cold calling (cold emailing too) from companies who promise “instant results” or “number one ranking” because if it sounds too good to be true…

No one can get your ranking up to page one in 24 hours or some other ridiculously short time. A good SEO will take the time to get to know you, your industry and your website and that takes time.

Don’t give anyone access to your site unless you’ve checked references, reviews or had several good sit downs with them until you trust them.  If they won’t let you speak with a former client or at least tell you a few names run away.

Educate yourself on basic SEO to avoid the “talk down” from someone who thinks using ten-dollar words will convince you of their stardom. Learn the basic terminology such as meta descriptions, keywords, content, site index, local, social, mobile and a few others so you’ll stand a fighting chance. Avoid the bullies.

-Be cautious of what are called “black hat” SEO techniques. Google has a set policy on how your onine presence and website can be found and many companies will try and get around them with sneaky links, bogus content, keyword stuffing and other nefarious methods. Recently Google has made many changes which penalize less than honest methods of driving web traffic and those who indulge in SEO scams will find their rankings and traffic hit the cellar after the almighty G learns of their crimes.
